"You can’t get these in America," the lady at the little shop near the Sydney Opera House told us. These were Australia's unique "black" opals, flashing with blue, green and red fire. A fitting symbol for that continent's rare and inaccessible poetry, which we see far too seldom here in the States. In this issue you'll find the crown jewels of Australian poetry, including international phenomenon John Kinsella, issue editor John Tranter, Dorothy Porter, Robert Adamson, and the grand dame of Australian letters, Dorothy Hewett. A sparkling collection of those rare gems, Australian women poets, is showcased here, including striking work by Aboriginal poet Lisa Bellear.

Australia rolled out the red carpet for Atlanta Review, beginning with a fabulous feature article in the Sydney Morning Herald and an interview for the national Arts Alive radio program. The issue sold out at the Adelaide Arts Festival (where Writers Week draws over 50,000 people) and the launch parties in both Adelaide and Sydney were standing room only. Launch festivities included an evening river cruise on the good ship Popeye, with poetry readings by John Kinsella and Matthew Sweeney. Along with Kangaroo Island, the Daintree Rain Forest and the Great Barrier Reef, Australia's enthusiasm for poetry is truly one of the wonders of Down Under!
